Ten drinking water projects stuck

Report: S.S.gargvanshi

Ambedkar Nagar :  The plan to provide pure drinking water to about 46 thousand population of two dozen villages of three development blocks is stuck. In fact, the level of land in the buildings where 10 projects are to be constructed under the Jaljeevan Mission is much lower than the normal level.

For the installation of overhead tank and tube well, soil has to be compacted on the concerned plot, but the work is hampered due to non-availability of soil. Patai work can be done only after getting permission for soil mining from the technical team of Jal Nigam and Mining Department. The process for this is going on.

The ongoing work to provide pure drinking water to the people under the Jaljeevan Mission Scheme is not gaining momentum. Pure drinking water is to be provided to the people in rural areas through a total of 571 projects in the district, but only 24 projects have been completed. Earlier all the projects were to be completed by March 2024 but later the deadline was extended to December 2024.

However, looking at the kind of pace, it can be easily estimated whether all the projects will be completed or not. There are 10 projects where the construction of overhead tanks and tube wells is hanging in the balance due to the land level not being normal.

According to the Jal Nigam office, the places where overhead tanks and tube wells are to be installed are Pandey Paikoli, Mahmudpur Chapra, Basohari of Ramnagar development block, Maricha, Makrahi, Rampur, Shahpur Madermau of Bhiti development block and Kharagpur, Shammuddinpur, Durgpur Harishchandrapur of Katehri development block. The land is quite low.

The level of the land has to be normalized for the construction of overhead tanks and tube wells at these places. Soil has to be compacted for that.

According to the executing agency, the construction work is not progressing due to non-availability of soil. In the earlier meeting held in the Collectorate, the officials had talked about getting the soil compacting work done under the MNREGA scheme, but it is not possible to get the soil compacting work done under the scheme.
